Graduation Requirements, GPA Calculations & Honor Roll
REQUIREMENTS
This program of studies has been structured to help students and parents choose courses which fit the students' needs. The information below will aid in the understanding of the program format and the requirements that must be fulfilled by all students.
Students are responsible for satisfying all academic policies and prerequisites. Course prerequisites must be satisfied before taking a course. Students may submit appeals regarding course prerequisites with the administrative team.

* Beginning with the class of 2022, students will be required to take a math content course during senior year. Please refer to the list of Senior Math Content courses in the pages that follow.
**Beginning with the class of 2024, students must:
1) Pass locally developed competency assessment on US government and civics, and
2) Score 70% or better on 128 question civics naturalization exam on 2020 US Citizen and Immigration Services to graduate
***One credit in an Applied Technology course that meets advanced Information and Communication Technology (ICT) standards; chosen from a list of approved courses OR one credit in a non ICT Applied Technology course along with a .5 credit digital portfolio.
**** Beginning with the Class of 2024, students will be required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or file a waiver in order to receive a high school diploma. Students in the Class of 2024 will need to submit these forms no later than May 24, 2024.
Promotion Requirements
Promotion to the next grade is based upon the number of accumulated credits at the end of the school year. Retained students will be promoted at mid-year if they have obtained the necessary credits. However, promotion to senior status mid-year requires an approved plan for satisfying graduation requirements by the end of the academic year.

Requirements
FULL-TIME STATUS : Students must maintain full time status to participate in school activities, sports, and honor roll. Also, in some cases, students’ qualifications for government programs, such as Social Security benefits, are dependent on full time status.
MINIMUM ENROLLMENT FOR FULL-TIME STUDENTS
A student must be enrolled in course work for more than 50% of the school day each semester. This equals a minimum of four (4) hours of instructional time every day.
Schedule Change Policies
SCHEDULE CHANGES/STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Course changes will be made only during specified time periods and only for sound educational reasons. Students should choose their courses for the following year very carefully. During the school year schedule changes are often not possible due to scheduling and staffing limitations. Students are responsible for being aware of the consequences of the academic policies regarding course changes.
GRADES RESULTING FROM
SCHEDULE CHANGES
The following schedule applies to adding a new class:
- Students may only be added to new classes during the first five school days of each semester.
The following schedule and resultant grades applies to dropping a course:
- A course dropped in the first two weeks of the semester is not reflected on a student’s report card or transcript
- A grade of WI will be assigned if the course is dropped during weeks 3-5 of the semester. Although a grade of WI does not impact a student’s Grade Point Average or rank, a grade of WI will prevent a student from attaining honor-roll status for the quarter in which the course is dropped.
- A grade of WF will be assigned if the course is dropped after the fifth week of the semester. This is a failing grade and negatively impacts a student's Grade Point Average.
Grading and Ranking
A student's grade point average and rank are computed by using the final grade of courses with level
designations in their title (i.e. Standard, Standard A, Honors, AP).
Recommended College Preparatory Program
College entrance requirements vary. Catalogs should be checked carefully for specific admission policies. The
following is a general guideline highlighting what four year colleges often require as a high school program. To ensure the greatest success in gaining acceptance into a four-year college, College & Career Readiness or Honors/AP courses should be pursued.

Latin Honor System
Latin Honor System
As of 2016 Milford High School recognizes a greater number of high achieving students by bestowing Latin or
“Laude” honors. Beginning with the class of 2016, the Latin Honor System has been used to recognize three tiers
of achievement in addition to the Valedictorian and Salutatorian. The top ten ranking is no longer recognized.
The Latin Honor system (Laude System) is used to acknowledge three tiers of accomplishment, namely: cum
laude - “with honor”, magna cum laude – “with great honor” and summa cum laude - “with highest honor.”
Milford High School will use grade point average cutoffs of 3.5, 3.8 and 4.2 at the time of graduation for each tier
respectively. The following system is used:

All three tiers of honor recipients will be acknowledged in the graduation program, and students receiving the
distinction of ‘summa cum laude’ will be named during the ceremony. Class rankings will still be made available
to colleges and scholarship organizations.

HONOR ROLL
HIGH HONORS - A student must be full-time (enrolled in 3 credits) and obtain no grade less than an “A-” in all courses.

Further qualifications for honor roll: A grade of ‘WI” will disqualify the student for the honor roll for the quarter in which a course is dropped. In order to be eligible for honor roll a student must carry a minimum of three credits each semester.
