Extended Learning Opportunities

 

Milford High School affords students multiple opportunities to earn credit outside of the traditional classroom.  Information and paperwork regarding these opportunities should be obtained from the Student Services department, as certain grade restrictions may apply. The “Extended Learning Opportunities” include the following:

 
 
 
Career Focus Internship                   3002
1/2 Credit/Semester                 Grade 12
Internships provide students with the opportunity to explore career interests by actively participating in a professional work environment. This competency-based program will allow students the opportunity to observe how decision making, problem solving, technology, communication and teamwork contributes to the workplace. Students will develop a professional portfolio that includes a cover letter, resume, and a capstone project directly related to their career of interest.  Seniors will be supervised by the Career Development Specialist and an assigned Workplace Mentor. A commitment to completing internship hours, weekly group internship meetings, weekly attendance forms, journal entries, and a capstone presentation are required. An Internship Application and Mentor/Mentee Agreement are also required prior to site approval. Internship hours (Minimum 65 hours) are completed outside of the regular school day. Students should plan to work 6-8 hours per week at their internship site during the school week.  

Prerequisites
  • C average or higher (or permission of the instructor) and having passed all classes taken in the semester prior to the internship
  • Successfully passed one (1) course related to the student’s industry of interest
  • An excellent attendance and discipline record
  • Teacher or School Counselor endorsement
  • The ability to work independently
  • Reliable transportation with an automotive insurance policy that includes the following coverage for the driver: Minimum of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident liability, $100,000 property damage, and $5,000 medical payments in automobile insurance on the vehicle being used for transportation.

Independent Study/Directed Study             9997               
Credit determined by individual plan
Grades 11-12
An Independent Study/Directed Study provides students with the opportunity to pursue in-depth learning through a capstone project/experience of interest.  This approach to learning allows a student to extend their education beyond the standard course structure of a classroom. Student capstone topic will focus on a specific area of study that requires a high level of self-directed learning.  
The options below are to be used for course credit obtained outside of the Program of Studies and cannot be used in lieu of a regularly scheduled class. 
Options for Independent or Directed Study plan may include, but are not limited to: 
-Capstone research project designed with a teacher or school counselor mentor. 

-Students may pursue a position as a teacher’s assistant for the elementary or secondary classroom (Directed Study) while focusing on their approved capstone project. 
 
Students are required to complete an Independent/Directed Study Contract which includes a faculty recommendation, an approval from an assigned Faculty Mentor, the MHS Principal and/or the Director of Career Technical Education.  Students must be able to work independently, be dependable/conscientious and sincere in their pursuit of expanding their learning and knowledge base. Students will be required to present the capstone project to a panel of mentors for final evaluation.

  • Ability to Work Independently

Extended Learning Opportunity                Grades 11-12

An Extended Learning Opportunity allows students to pursue an internship or job shadow experience directly related to their career of interest in partnership with a career mentor/employer.  Student capstone topic will focus on leading industry trends under the supervision of a faculty mentor. This career study requires a high level of self-directed learning.  

The options below are to be used for course credit obtained outside of the Program of Studies and cannot be used in lieu of a regularly scheduled class. 
ELO partnership can include, but is not limited to: 
-Pursuing training or coursework with a career or college learning institution or co-op partner/employer. Proof of program registration and successful program completion required.

-Work-based learning internship (65 hours/semester) completed with an approved local industry or community partner.

Online/Virtual Education        
Grades 9 – 12
Virtual/Online classes are available through the Internet and provide students the flexibility of anytime, anywhere access to rigorous, personalized education.  Virtual courses are for elective credit only. Virtual courses should only be taken when the course is not available through the regular curriculum.  Students are required to complete a Virtual/Online Application through Student Services which includes approval from a parent/guardian and the Administration.
   
 

CTE Work Based Learning
Grades: 11 - 12

Work-Based Learning (WBL) provides advanced CTE students the opportunity to learn about the world of work.  Students will develop and enhance essential 21st century workforce skills to become industry-ready. CTE WBL empowers students with real work experience, under the supervision of an approved work-site mentor, and the guidance of their CTE instructor. Advanced CTE classwork is meant to supplement and complement this WBL experience, therefore it is expected that students will attend CTE class when scheduled and complete all work as assigned. Credit will be awarded based on satisfactory evaluations from their site supervisor, participation in seminars, completion of related assignments & the number of verified WBL hours. The student is expected to meet with the Career Development Specialist regularly during TASC to review work performance goals, timesheets, journal entries, and capstone project.  Students will be required to present their approved capstone project to a panel of mentors, Career Development Specialist, and partnering CTE instructor for final evaluation.
 
Requirements: 
  • Students are required to meet all pre-employment & employment expectations (including all policies, rules, & regulations). This may include, but is not limited to, aptitude screenings, physicals, background checks, drug screenings, dress code, cell phone policy etc. WBL activities may take place during the school day or outside of school hours, paid and non paid. 
 
  • Students must have reliable transportation, valid driver’s license ,and an automotive insurance policy that includes the following coverage for the driver: Minimum of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident liability, $100,000 property damage, and $5,000 medical payments in automobile insurance on the vehicle being used for transportation.


Prerequisites: 
  • Successful completion of 1 year (2 credits) in a CTE program with CTE instructor WBL recommendation
  • Excellent attendance and discipline record
  • Ability to Work Independently
  • Parent/guardian support and approval.
