World Language

The World Language program offers the study of language in the context of culture and global understanding. Using Comprehensible Input (CI), a method in which students are exposed to another language via short stories, students will be presented with a variety of real, fictional and cultural stories to acquire the language. In addition to CI, the teacher will enhance the class with grammar explanations and grammar drills.

In levels one and two, mastery of core competencies typically would be indicated by a grade of C or better, whereas a grade of B– or better would indicate mastery of core competencies in levels three and four.

It is recommended that college-bound students take a minimum of two levels

of the same world language. (Taking world language is not a graduation requirement.)

French II offers students the opportunity to expand their knowledge of the French language and their ability to communicate. Emphasis is on applying vocabulary, grammar and linguistics through listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities expanding their knowledge of the cultures.

French III builds on the basic communication skills and concepts acquired in previous courses. Emphasis is on communicating in the language, demonstrating knowledge of culture, using correct vocabulary grammar and conventions. Classroom interactions are conducted primarily in French. Students complete daily reading and writing assignments in the language.

French IV offers the student opportunity to gain higher order thinking and reasoning skills in the context of language learning. Emphasis is on reading and interpreting authentic French texts, on increasing conceptual knowledge of literature, and on advanced grammar and writing skills. Latin Prose offers students further study of ancient Roman prose authors, such as Cicero, Caesar, and Livy. Notable works by ancient authors challenge students to expand their knowledge of the Romans and make connections to Latin contemporary society. Students apply advanced vocabulary, grammar, and linguistics in translations while demonstrating their understanding by comparing and contrasting ideas about governments, rules, and societies.

Latin 5 - Poetry (Honors) 2613

Latin Poetry offers students a focused study of ancient Roman poets, such as Vergil and Catullus. Students study epic poetry through Vergil’s Aeneid and apply rules of Latin poetic forms. The poems of Catullus and others offer the student additional study in meter, scansion, and interpretation. Students demonstrate their understanding by comparing and contrasting the poems and the ideas expressed in the poems.

Exploring World Cultures offers students an exposure to other peoples of the world, their culture, fashion, food, important peoples, and other activities such as dance, music, past times, literature. Students will develop an understanding of the peoples with whom we share this planet.

Medical Terminology: Exercises in Etymology (CCP) 0598

The Medical Terminology – Exercises in Etymology course introduces students to modern medical terminology based on an understanding of etymology, the study of word origins. Students will learn both Greek and Latin prefixes, roots, and suffixes with examples from culture, mythology, and the medical practices of the ancient Greeks and Romans.

English Learners (EL) Education Services 0600

The EL Education Services class is offered to identified EL students who benefit from extra support learning English in school. With specialized instruction and appropriate scaffolding, EL students progress in language development, cultural familiarity, academic skills, and content knowledge. Students are engaged in meaningful learning with specialized materials or class content that meets standards-based language and instructional goals.
