HEALTH SCIENCE  is a competency-based Career & Technical Education program offered at Milford High School & Applied Technology Center. To earn completer status in this program, students must pass Health Science I & II with a grade of “C” or better.  Students are eligible to earn Industry Recognized Credentials or Certification by passing Third-Party exams administered to program completers.

Health Science I is a year-long Career Technical Education course that provides students with the basic foundational information that every health care worker must know to be successful in the healthcare field.  This course provides the student with an overview of the many different career opportunities available in the healthcare industry, such as nursing, physical therapy, and emergency medicine.  Students will complete an extensive career search, which will give them information regarding educational requirements, job descriptions, wages, benefits and employment outlook for various healthcare employment opportunities.  Students will learn basic health care skills such as taking vital signs, and blood pressures. Students will also have the opportunity to get CPR, AED and First Aid certified. Other topics covered in this course include basic medical terminology, infection control, universal precautions, HIPAA, interpersonal relationships, and human body structure and function, nutrition, and employability skills.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Algebra I and 9th grade English with a “C” or better.

Students in Health Science II will continue working on advancing the basic skills learned in Health Science I. Students successfully completing Health Science I will demonstrate competencies in accordance with National Health Care Skills Standards. Focus for the second year contains a variety of entry level community and public health careers. Students understand the requirements of workers in this field as well as learn the ethical, legal, safety and HIPAA protocols of these professionals. This course teaches students how to assess normal body system functions and vital signs, including how to identify communicable and non-communicable health threats. Additionally, students learn transmission-based precautions and disease across lifespan. Students learn how to prevent and manage such threats through extensive research, projects and service-based learning. Other areas emphasized in this course are medical terminology, regulatory agencies, current technology, socio-economic issues affecting health/healthcare and mental health. Students research career opportunities in prevention, management, emergency care and support services in this field. Students will become certified in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid & Automated External Defibrillation. These certifications will be invaluable for those who are interested in a career in the healthcare field such as physician, nurse, physical therapist, dental hygienist, veterinarian, or pharmacist.

CTE Articulation Agreement possible for Keene State College bound students :  Keene State College will award college credits for CTE program completers who attend Keene State College.  Students must earn a "B" average.  Please use the link above to pursue this credit with Keene State College.
 
CTE Work Based Learning

Work-Based Learning (WBL) provides advanced CTE students the opportunity to learn about the world of work.  Students will develop and enhance essential 21st century workforce skills to become industry-ready. CTE WBL empowers students with real work experience, under the supervision of an approved work-site mentor, and the guidance of their CTE instructor. Advanced CTE classwork is meant to supplement and complement this WBL experience, therefore it is expected that students will attend CTE class when scheduled and complete all work as assigned. Credit will be awarded based on satisfactory evaluations from their site supervisor, participation in seminars, completion of related assignments & the number of verified WBL hours. The student is expected to meet with the Career Development Specialist regularly during TASC to review work performance goals, timesheets, journal entries, and capstone project.  Students will be required to present their approved capstone project to a panel of mentors, Career Development Specialist, and partnering CTE instructor for final evaluation.  
 
Requirements: 
  • Students are required to meet all pre-employment & employment expectations (including all policies, rules, & regulations). This may include, but is not limited to, aptitude screenings, physicals, background checks, drug screenings, dress code, cell phone policy etc. WBL activities may take place during the school day or outside of school hours, paid and non-paid. 
 
  • Students must have reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and an automotive insurance policy that includes the following coverage for the driver: Minimum of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident liability, $100,000 property damage, and $5,000 medical payments in automobile insurance on the vehicle being used for transportation.

  • Successful completion of 1 year (2 credits) in a CTE program with CTE instructor WBL recommendation
  • Excellent attendance and discipline record
  • Ability to Work Independently
