Biotechnology and Biomedical Sciences

Biotechnology and Biomedical Sciences is a competency-based Career & Technical Education program offered at Milford High School & Applied Technology Center. Students who complete Biotechnology I are considered CTE Participants by the NH Department of Education; those who go on to take Biotechnology II are considered Concentrators. Students are eligible to earn Industry-Validated Certificates or Credentials by passing Third-Party exams administered to all Concentrators.

Instructor, Valerie Moran:

I received my B.A in Biology from Fresno State University and my M.S in Biology from Clemson University. I have been teaching for close to three decades.  Most of my teaching experience has been in California where I taught both middle and high school science.  At the high school level, I have taught Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, Medical Terminology, Health Occupations and Project Lead the Way’s (PLTW) Biomedical Science program.

In June of 2021, my family and I moved to New Hampshire.  When the CTE Biotechnology/Biomedical Sciences position became available, I jumped at the opportunity.  I love working with students, teaching them how to use PCR and gel electrophoresis to manipulate DNA, stain microorganisms and perform gene transformation.  I am excited for the Biotechnology II students to be partnering with ARMI’s (Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute) Biotrek program.  This is an amazing opportunity to expose students to a real-world challenge, use critical thinking skills to solve the challenge,  interact with industry advisors and learn different professions in advanced manufacturing and technology sectors.

What students are saying...

"Biology is hard, they say. Well, when taking Biotechnology at Milford High School I never expected it to have the exact same material as my college biology seminar. Now, I have an A in the course, and looking back I wasn't even going to take her class. I guess it's true what they say- you miss one-hundred percent of the shots you don't take!" ~Meghan Wood, '19

“I am so grateful for all of the experience and knowledge I have gained through the ATC classes at Milford High School, including Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2, Microbiology and Biotechnology. I know I will be so much more successful in both college and in my career by having taken advantage of not only the classes themselves but also the insight of the teachers who are truly experts in the fields they teach. I highly recommend for everyone to become a part of this program in order to gain valuable knowledge through hands-on experiences that are applicable to a variety of occupations.” ~Autumn Arel, '20
