Extended Learning Opportunities

Milford High School affords students multiple opportunities to earn credit outside of the traditional classroom. Information and paperwork regarding these opportunities should be obtained from the Student Services department, as certain grade restrictions may apply. The “Extended Learning Opportunities” include the following:

Career Focus Internship	3002
1/2 Credit Semester	Grade 12

The Career Focus Internship provides students with the opportunity to explore career interests by actively participating in a professional work environment. This competency-based program will allow students the opportunity to observe how decision making, problem solving, technology, communication and teamwork skills are utilized in a professional environment in a specific industry. Seniors will be supervised by the Career Development Specialist and an assigned Work-place Mentor. A commitment to completing work place hours, weekly group internship meetings, weekly attendance forms, journal entries and a Capstone presentation are required. A Pre-Internship Application and Mentor/Mentee Application are also required prior to starting with an Internship sponsor. Internship hours (Minimum 65 hours) may need to be completed outside the regular school day. Students may be required to interview with a potential Internship sponsor before being placed in the program.
Expectation: Self Directed Learner, Complex Thinker, Social Expectations
Prerequisite:

A 2.3 GPA or higher (or permission of the instructor) and having passed all classes taken in the semester prior to the internship
Successfully passed one (1) course related to the student’s industry of interest
An excellent attendance and discipline record
The ability to work independently
Reliable transportation
Parent/guardian support and approval.

Career Focus Independent Internship	3005
1/2 or 1 Credit	Grades 11-12

The Career Focus Independent Internship provides students with the opportunity to explore career inter-ests by actively participating in a professional work environment. The program parallels the Career Focus Internship course but may start anytime during the calendar year. Juniors and Seniors will be supervised by a MHS Faculty Mentor and an assigned Workplace Mentor. A commitment to completing work place hours, weekly group internship meetings, weekly attendance forms, journal entries and a Capstone presentation are required. A Pre-Internship Application and Mentor/Mentee Application are also required prior to starting with an Internship sponsor. Internship hours (Minimum 65 hours) may need to be completed outside the regular school day. Students may be required to interview with a potential Internship sponsor before being placed in the program.

Independent Study/Directed Study	9997
1/2 Credit	Grades 11-12

An Independent Study/Directed Study provides stu-dents with the opportunity to pursue learning on their own (Independent Study) OR under the direct supervision of a teacher outside of the classroom or assisting in the classroom (Directed Study) with greater flexibility. These options are to be used for course work outside of the Program of Studies and cannot be used in lieu of a regularly scheduled class. Students must be self-directed, dependable, conscientious and sincere in their pursuit of expanding their learning and knowledge base. Students are required to complete an Independent/Directed Study Contract which includes a faculty recommendation, an approval from an assigned Faculty Mentor, the MHS Principal and the Director of Academic or Technical Studies.

Expectation: Self Directed Learner, Complex Thinker, Community Contributor, Quality Producer Prerequisite: Good academic standing, good attendance and discipline record, can work independently, reliable transportation, parent/guardian approval.

Community Service Learning
Semester Projects, ½ Credit	Grades 9-12
Term Projects, ¼ Credit

Service Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility and strengthen the local community. Through service learning, students use what they learn in the classroom to solve real-life problems. They not only learn the practical applications of their studies, they become actively contributing citizens and community members through the service they perform. Service learning engages students in community-based activities while they practice curriculum-based skills and competencies. Students (or groups of students) are required to complete a Service Learning Application/Contract which includes a faculty recommendation, an approval from an assigned Faculty Mentor, the MHS Principal and the Director of Academic or Technical Studies.

Work Study/Cooperative Education	9998
½ Credit or 1 Credit	Grades 11-12

The Work Study/Cooperative Education program provides students in a Career & Technical Education program with the opportunity to be a student-learner in a professional work environment. Through a cooperative arrangement between the school and an employer, students receive career and technical education instruction through MHS classes and employment in a related field. Students are required to make, in advance, a Cooperative Education Application which must be submitted to the NH Department of Labor for approval. Juniors and Seniors who apply will be supervised by a MHS Faculty Mentor/Supervisor and an assigned Workplace Mentor/Supervisor. This paid experience requires a commitment to completing work place hours, weekly co-op meetings, weekly attendance forms, journal entries and a final presentation. Hourly requirements are minimum 65 hours for .5 credit; 130 hours for 1 credit based on the agreed upon work schedule. Hours may need to be completed outside the regular school day. Students may be required to interview before being accepted.

Prerequisite: Good academic standing, one (1) semester completion in a CTE course, good attendance and discipline record, can work independently, reliable transportation, parent/guardian support and approval.

Online/Virtual Education
Maximum 2 Credits	Grades 9 – 12

Virtual/Online classes are available through the Internet and provide students the flexibility of anytime, anywhere access to rigorous, personalized education. Virtual courses are for elective credit only and are limited to 2 credits during a student’s high school career. Virtual courses should only be taken when the course is not available through the regular curriculum. Students are required to complete a Virtual/Online Application through Student Services which includes approval from a parent/guardian and the Director of Academic or Technical Studies.
