To earn completer status in this program, students must pass Accounting I, II & III with a grade of “C” or better. Ever want to own your own business but have no idea how you would process financial transactions? Are you planning on enrolling in a college business program? Did you know that means two years of accounting is mandatory ... why not take it in high school and get a head start? Accounting provides strong foundational skills for the business related field. Learn the accounting cycle using manual and computerized accounting systems for sole proprietorships and explore the language of business; accounting. Students will learn how, as a business owner, to process their daily transactions and pay the company's monthly expenses and look at a service business and begin looking at a merchandising business. Students are assessed on chapter work, quizzes, computer problems/projects, and simulations. This semester course is open to any student in grades 10-12 who is planning on a career in accounting, business management, finance, marketing, or plans to go into business on their own.
 
College Credits: Upon completion of Accounting 2 college credits for sophomores, juniors and seniors can be earned through Southern New Hampshire University (ACC 201 Financial Accounting)

Accounting 2 1421

1 Credit Grades 10-12

You can earn credits towards your college degree at MHS! Students will expand upon the knowledge of Accounting I and explore merchandising businesses organized as a corporation, and analyze the adjustments and valuations of the business. Topics include accounting for uncollectible accounts receivables, financial statements analysis, acquiring capital for growth and development, inventory, accruals and deferrals, as well as end of fiscal period work. Students are assessed on chapter work, quizzes, computer problems/projects, and simulations. This semester course is open to any student in grades 10- 12 who is planning a career in accounting, business management, finance, marketing, banking or plans on going into business on their own.

 

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Accounting I with a C or better.

 

College Credits: Accounting II can earn college credits for sophomores, juniors and seniors through Southern New Hampshire University (ACC 201 Financial Accounting) NOTE: Students that earn a grade of “C” or better in both Accounting I and Accounting II will satisfy the Fourth Math Credit as required for graduation from Milford High School.

Accounting III - QuickBooks 1418
1 Credit Grades 10-12
Students will expand upon the foundational skills established in Accounting I and II and obtain an insight to the thriving and dynamic field of professional accounting through various real world and simulated real world experiences using the best accounting software for small businesses, QuickBooks Online. The focus will be on understanding how businesses process transactions and how they are integrated with technology as well as using analytics skills in order to explain the business reasons behind all types of financial transactions. Students will also use Microsoft Applications, and Google Applications. Students in this course receive their QuickBooks Online certification, which will give them a tremendous head start in their career.
 
College Credits: Completion of Accounting III may be able to earn 3 college credits for Intermediate Accounting at Southern New Hampshire University’s SNHU in the High School program. (ACC315 Accounting Information Systems).

BIOTECHNOLOGY is a competency-based Career & Technical Education program offered at Milford High School & Applied Technology Center. To earn completer status in this program, students must pass Biotechnology & Biomedical Science full year course with a grade of “C” or better. Students are eligible to earn Industry-Validated Certificates or Credentials by passing Third-Party exams administered to all completers.

Biotechnology & Biomedical Science 1824 

2 Credits Grades 10-12 

Biotechnology & Biomedical Science is a one-year program for students interested in pursuing a major or career in the medical or veterinary sciences, genetics, forensic science and biotechnology and many affiliated fields. This is a very hands-on program where you will learn skills and techniques in our state-of-the-art laboratory while preparing you for these high-demand jobs. In the first semester, you will focus on microbiological techniques such as aseptic technique, growing culture, media preparation, microbial genetics and identification. You will also study techniques in DNA manipulation, cell culture, protein, purification, drug discovery, bioinformatics, and much more. If you enjoy the sciences in a hands-on laboratory environment, then this course is for you!

4 Early College Credits are available through Manchester Community College. 

The second semester focuses on advanced topics and skills related to biomedical science, biochemistry and biotechnology. Students will be exposed to various biotechnology fields and further their skills in areas including recombinant DNA technology, protein production, purification, DNA 'barcoding', and plant and animal cell culture techniques.Through recreations/replications of actual industry investigations and intense laboratory efforts, students will perform individual research projects. Students will maintain lab equipment and will gain experience writing technical labs, protocols, and a formal research paper. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in the Biotrek program sponsored by ARMI (The Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute).

Business I - Understanding Business 1482

In this course students create and operate a product-based business within the classroom. With a large focus on the Four Functions of Management (Planning, Organizing, Leading, & Controlling), they will learn first-hand the operations, marketing, sales, finance, and management of a small business. They will apply decision-making skills and work collaboratively within a business environment. Students will learn how to make informed decisions as both consumers and producers while developing a stronger understanding of the role of commerce in our economy. This is the first course in the business pathway. Course skills: collaboration, teamwork, small business management, and decision making
 
 
Business II - Managing & Leading in Business 1484

In this course students will explore leadership and management theories and how to incorporate them in one’s own personal style for effective contribution and collaboration in diverse team environments. Students will also learn about the skills that are needed to lead in different areas of business. Students will develop a business plan for a retail service business while managing school store operations as a culminating experience in this class using agile methodology best practices. This is the second course in the business pathway. Course skills: presentation, networking, time management, Kaizen, and Six Sigma

Entrepreneurship Capstone: Recognizing Business Opportunities 1488 1 Credit Grades 11-12

Students in this class will explore industry trends as they relate to current world events. During this time they will apply the roles and responsibilities of leadership within teams. Students will develop a business proposal for local business partners using business best practices and applying core competencies, along with emphasizing employability skills. Students will learn through project-based learning by bringing their business proposal to life, and working with industry partners to create an authentic real-world work environment. This course will offer each student the opportunity to earn industry recognized credentials through HubSpot. This is the third course in the business or marketing pathway. 

 

*Students completing Marketing 3, during the 23/24 school year, with a grade of C+ or better are also eligible to take this class. 

 

Prerequisite: Completion of Marketing II or Business II with a grade of “C+” or better. 

Students in the Business & Marketing & Accounting programs are strongly encouraged to be active participants in the MHS Chapter of FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). FBLA prepares students interested in careers in the business world by developing the essential skills of leadership.

In this course students will learn the introductory skills needed to understand the world of Marketing. Students will learn about purchasing, sales promotion, distribution, pricing, the marketing mix, market research, and how to design a marketing plan. Knowledge will be applied through a broad variety of activities and hands-on projects.

Students will further their marketing knowledge and explore more in depth marketing concepts through practical experiences, marketing research, case studies, and self-directed projects. Topics include product development, marketing research, and marketing campaign creation. Students will engage in project-based learning and be exposed to marketing experiences such as working with local businesses in helping them to develop new marketing strategies.

CARPENTRY I 1767

2 Credits Full-Year

Grades 10-12

The Carpentry 1 class is the introduction to basic residential construction and related trades. We build a solid foundation in the areas of: safe, appropriate use of hand and power tools; measuring and cutting; accuracy with rulers, levels, and squares. Students are introduced to basic framing, codes, plan reading, construction and woodworking methods. Students will engage in a variety of modules to develop their understanding and implement these skills. Students are exposed to a variety of industry related experiences and guest speakers. Upon successful completion of this class, students are encouraged to continue on to the second year in Carpentry 2.

 

Prerequisite: NONE: Woodworking is encouraged but not required. 

 

CARPENTRY II 1768

2 Credits Full Year

Grades 11 -12

This course is the continuation of the Carpentry 1 Program. Emphasis of this course is refinement, application, and extension of skills from previous courses in hands-on projects. Students will engage in more advanced projects that teach skills including but not limited to metal stud framing, drywall, exterior roofing and siding, roof calculations, concrete, building codes, finish carpentry, and woodworking. These skills will be applied to more complex and challenging operations and projects. Guest speakers from industry, job shadowing and company tours will be part of the experience. Advanced students who are ready to join the workforce will be assisted in pursuing paid or unpaid work based learning opportunities. Students will become OSHA-10 certified. 

 

Prerequisite: Completion of Carpentry 1 with a grade of “C+” or better and instructor approval.

 

Articulation Agreement: successful completion of 2 course sequence results in college credits at Keene State College (may only be used at KSC). 

 

 

Program Assistantships or Independent Study opportunities may be available to selected students for credit. Interested students that have completed the core of the Carpentry program should discuss these possibilities with the program instructor.

COMPUTER SCIENCE is a competency-based Career & Technical Education program offered at Milford High School & Applied Technology Center. To earn completer status in this program, students must pass both pathways; NETWORKING & CYBERSECURITY AND SOFTWARE ENGINEERING with a grade of “C” or better. Students are eligible to earn Industry-Validated Certificates or Credentials by passing Third-Party exams administered to all program completers.

To become a completer in this program, students must pass both Culinary Arts I and Culinary Arts II with a grade of “C” or better. Students are eligible to earn Industry-Validated Certificates or Credentials by passing the Pro-Start exams administered to program completers.

Culinary Arts I 1837

2 Credits Full-Year Grades 10-12*

Culinary Arts I is the first half of the Culinary Arts Program. Students learn to work in a professional kitchen with constant focus on sanitation and safety. In our industry standard food production setting, students learn techniques in hot and cold food preparation as well as baking. Students in Culinary Arts I will begin to develop food service management skills in the areas of customer service, cost control, communication, leadership, and problem solving. Students will gain knowledge in the areas of nutrition, organizational structure, and sustainability. Windows on West Street, our on-campus restaurant, affords students the opportunity to develop "front-of-the-house" skills. Students develop collaboration skills and learn how to function as a member of a team - highly desirable skills in the hospitality industry or any industry.

 

Note: All CA I students are required to purchase program approved chef’s coat and hat (approx. $25.00).

This program continues to follow the nationally recognized ProStart curriculum developed by the NRAEF. Culinary Arts II offers advanced students the opportunity to further enhance the food preparation and management skills learned in Culinary Arts I. They will learn food development and marketing, and will increase their knowledge of cost management through understanding of income statements, purchasing, inventory control, and menu analysis. Through the operation of Windows on West Street, students will gain experience in volume food production, live customer service, and restaurant management. Students will be expected to provide high quality food preparation and professional level table and counter service. They will develop a higher level of professionalism, teamwork, and leadership. Preparation for the Level II ProStart Certificate Exam is a priority. The work experience embedded in the ProStart curriculum will take on increased significance for advanced students as it is required for the NRAEF Certificate of Achievement (COA). This work experience is NOT a requirement for program completion, but students are strongly encouraged to participate.

Health Science Occupations I

Grades 10-12
Health Science I is a year-long Career Technical Education course that provides students with the basic foundational information that every health care worker must know to be successful in the healthcare field. This course provides the student with an overview of the many different career opportunities available in the healthcare industry, such as nursing, physical therapy, and emergency medicine. Students will complete an extensive career search, which will give them information regarding educational requirements, job descriptions, wages, benefits and employment outlook for various healthcare employment opportunities. Students will learn basic health care skills such as taking vital signs, and blood pressures. Students will also have the opportunity to get CPR, AED and First Aid certified. Other topics covered in this course include basic medical terminology, infection control, universal precautions, HIPAA, interpersonal relationships, and human body structure and function, nutrition, and employability skills.
 
Expectation: Self-Directed Learner

Health Science Occupations II Coming 2025-2026 School Year
2 Credits Full-Year
Grades 11-12
Students in Health Science 2 will continue working on advancing the basic skills learned in Health Science 1. Students successfully completing Health Science I will demonstrate competencies in accordance with National Health Care Skills Standards. Focus for the second year contains a variety of entry level community and public health careers. Students understand the requirements of workers in this field as well as learn the ethical, legal, safety and HIPAA protocols of these professionals. This course teaches students how to assess normal body system functions and vital signs, including how to identify communicable and non-communicable health threats. Additionally, students learn transmission-based precautions and disease across lifespan. Students learn how to prevent and manage such threats through extensive research, projects and service-based learning. Other areas emphasized in this course are medical terminology, regulatory agencies, current technology, socio-economic issues affecting health/healthcare and mental health. Students research career opportunities in prevention, management, and emergency care and support services in this field. Students will become certified in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid & Automated External Defibrillation. These certifications will be invaluable for those who are interested in a career in the healthcare field such as physician, nurse, physical therapist, dental hygienist, veterinarian, or pharmacist.

PRECISION MACHINING is a competency-based Career & Technical Education program offered at Milford High School/Applied Technology Center. To earn completer status in this program, students must pass Precision Machining I & II with a grade of “C” or better. Students are eligible to earn Industry-Validated Certificates or Credentials by passing Third-Party exams administered to all completers.

Precision Machining I 1777

2 Credit Full-Year

Grades 10-11

Precision Machining runs the full academic year (two semesters.) During the first semester students enrolled in this first class will learn basic blueprint reading & measuring techniques. They will be introduced to basic hand tools and a variety of state of the art machines used in modern manufacturing. The safe and proper way to employ all tools and machines is an important component of this course. Students will have the opportunity to become OSHA-10 certified. Basic TIG welding safety and skills will be used, along with machining to create solutions to problems in a collaborative environment. 

During the second semester students will further build upon their skills and apply them to more complex and challenging operations. Material properties and machine speeds and feeds will be emphasized. Students will develop spatial intelligence, problem solving and Conversational Computer Numeric Control (NC/CNC) programming skills. Throughout the course, emphasis should be placed on safety, precision, and adherence to industry standards.Guest speakers from the precision machining and welding industries could be invited to provide real-world insights. Additionally, field trips to local machining facilities may enhance students' understanding of the industry.

Advanced Precision Machining also runs the full academic year (two semesters.) This is an introductory college level course in machine tool processes and theory. This course provides more in-depth instruction and practice on all of the basic machine tools and introduces the cutting edge technologies that enable manufacturing to create the products our technology-driven society demands. CNC programming and operations will be expanded to include complex projects and Computer Aided Machining (CAM.) The LEAN concepts that drive the modern advanced manufacturing environment will be woven into the course.

Prerequisite: Precision Machining I with a grade of “C” or better and instructor approval.

 

College Credit: Early College credits available through Nashua Community College

PRE-ENGINEERING is a competency-based Career & Technical Education program offered at Milford High School & Applied Technology Center. Students take Engineering Design I & II to be considered a program completer and program concentrator. Students are eligible to earn Industry Recognized Certifications or Credentials by passing third -party exams in addition to Running Start Credits (dual Credit) offered through Manchester Community College.

Engineering Design I 1715

Grades 10-12

Students in this class develop their design skills as the first step of engineering. These concepts begin with focus on using engineering graphics as the primary means of communication using a variety of CAD software (Solidworks & AutoDesk) packages. The software packages are the same products used by professionals in engineering disciplines such as; mechanical, architecture, civil, and manufacturing. Students will complete a series of individual and project based activities that involve career pathways discovery such as; Mechanical Engineer, Architect, Civil Engineer, CNC Machinist, Design Engineer, and Welder to name a few. These projects revolve around the engineering design process with emphasis on problem solving, brainstorming, criteria generation, decision-making, economics and project management. Projects will be fabricated using the latest rapid prototyping methods such as; 3D printing, Laser Cutting, and CNC Machining.

Engineering Design II 1722

2 Credit Full-Year 

Grades 11-12

This course is designed to provide high school students with a comprehensive understanding of engineering principles and practices, with a specific focus on creative robotics design, automated systems and the manufacturing processes. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and hands-on experiences, students will explore various career pathways in engineering, including safety, robotics, CNC, quality control, quality assurance, LEAN manufacturing, and manufacturing processes. This class is a continuation of the learning and problem solving in Design & Engineering I. It is for students who have an interest or passion for creative problem solving with real-world applications. In class we work in teams with the latest VEX robotics, Dobot Magicians, Roland CNC Machine, and much more. Throughout this course students will be provided with experiential opportunities, these work-based opportunities will help students expand and apply their engineering skills. Opportunities that will also include job shadowing, field trips, professional conferences, and engineering societies to name a few. This course also offers an industry alignment and ELO component for students that meet the requirements. Students will have a paid off campus experience as they rotate through a variety of companies during the spring semester.

Video Production is a competency-based Career & Technical Education program offered at Milford High School & Applied Technology Center. To earn “Program Completer” status in this program, students must pass Video Production I & II with a grade of “C” or better. Students are eligible to earn Industry Recognized Credentials or Certification by passing Third-Party exams administered to program completers.

Students in this class will develop basic skills and competencies relating to narrative filmmaking, live broadcast production, and corporate, educational, and social-media based production. The curriculum is taught through a largely, project-centered methodology, which combines “hands-on”, practical, and theory based instruction - with the emphasis on developing usable and transferable workplace skills and competencies. Specific areas of study include such things as camera operation, visual composition, audio recording, 3-point lighting, non-linear (computer-based) editing, camera movement, writing, copyright law, and more. Students will use a variety of industry-standard, professional style production equipment and software – providing an authentic experience. They will advance their general computer technology skills using one of the 20 high-end, PC’s located within the multi-room studio. Students should also anticipate using (and learning more about) their smartphones in class, which they will employ to take photos and videos as part of their project work. Equally important in the students' training will be learning more about – and building - career-based, “Professional Skills”.

College Credits: For those who register for the “Early College at High School” program, and complete both Video Production I & II with a “C” or better, three college credits will be obtained. Great Bay Community College has made this available to 10th-12th graders.

This second, more advanced full-year course is encouraged for students who are most serious about video production, or may be interested in pursuing a future in some area of professional production. The class is heavily project-based and output focused, where students shall demonstrate a significant commitment to expanding and applying their skills in the crafts of filmmaking, live broadcast, and content creation. They must have a strong ability to work well independently, and maintain a focus on creating high-quality material that meets professional standards. All aspects of the students pre-production, production, and post-production training and experience will deepen and expand, including such things as project planning and management, blocking and staging, advanced lighting-design, cinematography, ADR (Automated Dialog Replacement), voiceovers and podcasts, audio recording/editing, film-analysis, screenplay writing, proxy editing, location scouting, mounting/ movement/gimbals, etc. New to the class is a unit on professional drone use, which culminates with testing to achieve the FAA Recreational Certification. During the semester, students will have access to; the full Adobe Creative Cloud software suite; a dedicated 4k mirrorless camera, field-trips, guest speakers, and more. They will also have the expanded time and freedom to explore and advance their particular passions. Each student must demonstrate a solid commitment to maintain the rigor, skills, and professionalism required to meet all the expanded demands and production workflows they will encounter. And by taking this class, the expectation is that students have a strong desire to seek out future work/career/post-secondary education in a production related field, and will participate in opportunities presented to explore professional experience / training outside of class. By the end of the semester, students will be trained to produce a short “reel” (or even develop a website) to display highlights of their best project work.
