World Language
The World Language program offers the study of language in the context of culture and global understanding. Using Comprehensible Input (CI), a method in which students are exposed to another language via short stories, students will be presented with a variety of real, fictional and cultural stories to acquire the language. In addition to CI, the teacher will enhance the class with grammar explanations and grammar drills.
In levels one and two, mastery of core competencies typically would be indicated by a grade of C or better, whereas a grade of B– or better would indicate mastery of core competencies in levels three and four.

It is recommended that college-bound students take a minimum of two levels
of the same world language. (Taking world language is not a graduation requirement.)
FRENCH

French I introduces students to the Francophone world by developing their ability to understand, speak, read, and write in French. Emphasis is on developing and using vocabulary, grammar and linguistics in the context of daily living. Students make connections between their lives and the lives of French speaking people.

French II offers students the opportunity to expand their knowledge of the French language and their ability to communicate. Emphasis is on applying vocabulary, grammar and linguistics through listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities expanding their knowledge of the cultures.

French III builds on the basic communication skills and concepts acquired in previous courses. Emphasis is on communicating in the language, demonstrating knowledge of culture, using correct vocabulary grammar and conventions. Classroom interactions are conducted primarily in French. Students complete daily reading and writing assignments in the language.

French IV (Honors) 0553

French IV offers the student opportunity to gain higher order thinking and reasoning skills in the context of language learning. Emphasis is on reading and interpreting authentic French texts, on increasing conceptual knowledge of literature, and on advanced grammar and writing skills. Classroom interactions are conducted primarily in French.

LATIN

Latin I (Std. A) 0586

Latin I introduces students to the Romans, their language, culture, history, geography and mythology by developing their ability to read, understand, write and communicate in Latin. The presentation Latin vocabulary presentation gives attention to English derivatives and similarities in the words of other languages. Students make connections to their lives and the lives of the ancient Romans.

Latin II continues the study of Latin I by offering students the opportunity to expand their knowledge of the language and of the ancient Roman civilization while making connections to contemporary society. Emphasis is on applying Latin vocabulary, grammar, and linguistics through listening, reading, writing, and translation activities.

Latin III offers students the ability to expand their knowledge of vocabulary and grammar acquired in previous courses while studying a variety of prose and poetry in authentic Roman texts. Emphasis is placed on reading, translating, and interpreting the works to develop higher thinking and reasoning skills.
Prerequisite: Mastery of the core competencies of Latin II.

Latin IV Prose (Honors) 0591

Latin Prose offers students further study of ancient Roman prose authors, such as Cicero, Caesar, and Livy. Notable works by ancient authors challenge students to expand their knowledge of the Romans and make connections to Latin contemporary society. Students apply advanced vocabulary, grammar, and linguistics in translations while demonstrating their understanding by comparing and contrasting ideas about governments, rules, and societies.

Latin V Poetry (Honors) 0592

Latin Poetry offers students a focused study of ancient Roman poets, such as Vergil and Catullus. Students study epic poetry through Vergil’s Aeneid and apply rules of Latin poetic forms. The poems of Catullus and others offer the student additional study in meter, scansion, and interpretation. Students demonstrate their understanding by comparing and contrasting the poems and ideas.

Exploring World Cultures 0597

Exploring World Cultures offers students an exposure to other peoples of the world, their culture, fashion, food, important peoples, and other activities such as dance, music, past times, literature. Students will develop an understanding of the peoples with whom we share this planet.
Medical Terminology: Exercises in Etymology 0598

The Medical Terminology – Exercises in Etymology course introduces students to modern medical terminology based on an understanding of etymology, the study of word origins. Students will learn both Greek and Roman prefixes, roots, and suffixes with examples from culture, mythology, and the medical practices of the ancient Greek and Romans.

SPANISH

Spanish I introduces students to the world of Spanish speakers by developing their ability to understand, speak, read and write in Spanish. ESOL Education Services English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) 0600

The ESOL program is offered to students whose primary, home or dominant language is one other than English. English language skills are developed through grammar instruction and vocabulary expansion by way of materials adapted specifically for ESOL learners. Class discussions concerning similarities and differences between American society and way of life and students' societies enable students to go through the acculturation process. Specific oral and written projects are assigned to acquaint students with the American public school system and its academic requirements. In addition, the ESOL program serves as a link to assist in communication among students, teachers, Student Services and home.
