A well-rounded educational experience includes activities and learning that enhance physical fitness and promote a healthy lifestyle. Students who complete the wellness program at Milford High School will have the knowledge and skills needed to make healthy choices.

Health/Wellness I                           2550

1 Credit               Grade 9-10

This required class introduces numerous wellness topics that will be explored further in Wellness  II. Wellness I’s focus is on personal choices. The health units that will be covered are Personal  Responsibility and Behavior, introduction to Growth and Development, Alcohol and Drugs, STI’s and  Mental Health etc. The physical education units include individual and group activities designed to  emphasize community contribution. This course will provide students with an understanding of  personal fitness. The emphasis is on developing and understanding the importance of physical  activities for a healthy lifestyle.

 

 

 

Health/Wellness II                               2551                         

1 Credit               Grade 11-12

This required class is the extension of Wellness I. The units that will be explored are STI’s,  Diseases, Disorders, Substances Use and Abuse, Growth and Development, Life Choices and  Relationships. The major goal of this program is to encourage all students to make knowledgeable  decisions in leading a meaningful and healthy life. This course will provide students with an  understanding of personal fitness. The emphasis is on developing and understanding the importance  of physical activities for a healthy lifestyle. The physical education units include individual and  group activities designed to emphasize community contribution. At the conclusion of Wellness II,  students may be required to create a final project incorporating the information acquired throughout the semester.

 

 

 

Advanced Health                                2004

1 Credit               Grades 11-12

This elective course will provide students with a greater understanding of both personal and community health  issues. Emphasis is placed on providing current information on healthcare, diseases, lifestyle related epidemics and  growth and development changes. The major goal of the program is to provide students with both in depth knowledge  and effective strategies necessary to manage current and future health related issues. This course is oriented towards  students interested in pursuing a college education in the Wellness fields.*
Expectation: Personally Responsible Individuals
Recommendation: Successful completion of Physical Education, Wellness I & II.
*This course is oriented towards students interested in pursuing a college education in the fields  of Health and Wellness.

 

 

 

Exercise & Nutrition Sciences               2500

1 Credit               Grades 11-12

This elective course will provide students with a n opportunity to acquire a greater knowledge of  strength, cardiovascular fitness, nutrition and sport psychology in developing training strategies for various physical activities. Wellness careers will be explored. Students will design and utilize their  own personalized physical fitness program. Research and written class work will be expected of all  students on a regular basis. Grades will be based on the combination of projects, participation (in  weight room, gymnasium and on fields), classroom activities including activity logs, notes and worksheets.* 
Expectation: Flexible Adaptable Resilient Learners 
Recommendation: Successful completion of Physical Education, Wellness I & II.
*This course is oriented towards students interested in pursuing collegiate athletics and/or the  Health and Wellness field, sports medicine or kinesiology.
