Carpentry I 1767
2 Credits Full-Year Grades 10-12
The Carpentry I class is the introduction to basic residential construction and related trades. We build a solid foundation in the areas of: safe, appropriate use of hand and power tools; measuring and cutting; accuracy with rulers, levels, and squares. Students are introduced to fundamentals in framing, codes, plan reading, residential wiring, plumbing, drywall, home repair, construction and woodworking methods. Students will engage in a variety of modules to develop their understanding and implement these skills. Students are exposed to a variety of industry related experiences and guest speakers. Students will become OSHA-10 certified. Upon successful completion of this class (C+ or better), students are encouraged to continue on to the second year in Carpentry II.
Prerequisite: NONE: Woodworking is not required, but is encouraged.
Carpentry II 1768
2 Credits Full-Year Grades 11 -12
This course is the continuation of the Carpentry 1 Program. Emphasis of this course is refinement, application, and extension of skills from previous courses in hands-on projects. Students will engage in more advanced projects that teach skills including but not limited to metal stud framing, drywall, exterior roofing and siding, roof calculations, concrete, building codes, finish carpentry, and woodworking. These skills will be applied to larger, more complex and challenging operations and projects. Guest speakers from industry, job shadowing and company tours will be part of the experience. Students will become Hilti PAF certified.
Advanced students who are ready to join the workforce will be assisted in pursuing paid work based learning opportunities.
Prerequisite: Completion of Carpentry 1 with a grade of “C+” or better and instructor approval.
Articulation Agreement: successful completion of 2 course sequence results in college credits at Keene State College (may only be used at KSC).
Program Assistantships or Independent Study opportunities may be available to selected students for credit. Interested students that have completed the core of the Carpentry program should discuss these possibilities with the program instructor.
ADDITIONAL ELECTIVE IN CARPENTRY
Woodworking 1700
1 Credit Grades 9 - 10
This introductory woodworking course provides students with hands-on experience in designing and building projects using wood as a primary material. Students will learn the fundamentals of shop safety, measuring, layout, joinery and the proper use of hand tools and power equipment commonly found in a woodshop. An emphasis is placed on craftsmanship, problem-solving, basic math and developing practical skills that can be applied in both career and hobby settings. Throughout the semester, students will complete individual projects that may include items such as cutting boards, small furniture pieces, or decorative crafts. They will learn how to read simple plans, select appropriate materials, and apply finishing techniques to achieve a professional-quality result. Outside of the requirements of accurate measurements, cuts and finishing, creativity and personal expression are encouraged as students customize their work.Safety, responsibility, respect for the tools, workspace and other students are core expectations of the course. No prior experience is required—just a willingness to learn, build, and take pride in quality work.
CTE Articulation Agreement possible for Keene State College bound students : Keene State College will award college credits for CTE program completers who attend Keene State College. Students must earn a "B" average. Please use the link above to pursue this credit with Keene State College.

CTE Work Based Learning 1/2 Credit* 1 Credit* Grades: 11 - 12 Work-Based Learning (WBL) provides advanced CTE students the opportunity to learn about the world of work. Students will develop and enhance essential 21st century workforce skills to become industry-ready. CTE WBL empowers students with real work experience, under the supervision of an approved work-site mentor, and the guidance of their CTE instructor. Advanced CTE classwork is meant to supplement and complement this WBL experience, therefore it is expected that students will attend CTE class when scheduled and complete all work as assigned. Credit will be awarded based on satisfactory evaluations from their site supervisor, participation in seminars, completion of related assignments & the number of verified WBL hours. The student is expected to meet with the Career Development Specialist regularly during TASC to review work performance goals, timesheets, journal entries, and capstone project. Students will be required to present their approved capstone project to a panel of mentors, Career Development Specialist, and partnering CTE instructor for final evaluation. |
